Henricus Severdonck: Kyrie Gloria Credo Sanctus Agnus Dei Source: VienNB 11883, fols. 111r-120r. Written in a voce piena texture. Both style and notation suggest a date at the very end of the period covered on this website, if not slightly later. The otherwise unknown Severdonck shares with Nicolas Carlir the “hyper-correct” habit of spelling out the full fraction 3/2 in modus cum tempore signs. The anonymous song Waer is die alder liefte survives in Christian Egenolff’s Liederbuch (c153514) and the Antwerp reprint of this book in what has come to be known as the Kamper Liedboek (c.1539). Like so much of the repertoire in VienNB 11883, this Mass seems to have come either from, or by way of, Antwerp: Severdonck was a well-established family in Antwerp, and the village of Zeverdonk is 25 miles east of the city. (According to Kristine Forney, in EMH 7 [1987], 47, a Jan Zeverdonck held a chaplaincy in the Church of Our Lady at Antwerp in 1513-30.) |
